Steps to getting a CHL:

  1. 1. Sign-up to attend a CHL class taught by a State-Certified instructor

  2. 2. Fill out the online CHL application with the State*

  3. 3. Schedule a day and time to have your fingerprints taken electronically at an L-1 

     Fingerprint Enrollment Center**

  1. 4. Attend the CHL class and receive a CHL-100 training form (class fee is separate from 

     State processing fees)

  1. 5. Submit all remaining paperwork to the State

  2. 6. Wait to receive notification from the State that they are in receipt of all your information

  3. 7. Patiently wait while your application and background check are processed

  4. 8. Receive your CHL license in the mail (if no other circumstances arose during your 

     background check)

**The CHL Licensing Bureau must be in receipt of your CHL application (either via online or by mail) before you can schedule to have your fingerprints taken. Fingerprint fees are $9.95.
